Summary:

This follows a cocky pilot named Maverick. Who just so happens to get into Top Gun. A naval fighting school where the best of the best go to train to refine their elite flying skills. He goes with his co-pilot Goose who ends up dying half way threw the movie. Goose dying caused Maverick to become more reserve and not as cocky as he once was. But also becoming a team player which he wasn’t a big fan of up until seeing Goose die.

Throughout the movie, Maverick ends up having problems with another pilot named Iceman. It’s mainly having to do with Mavericks reckless attitude and cocky demeanor which can translate over to not really trusting Maverick when it comes to flying.

Not only does Maverick have to compete with the others on being the best of the best, he also wants to impress his instructor, Charlotte Blackwood. Who ends up wanting to talk some sense into him shortly after Goose his best friend dies.

Thoughts:

This was my first time watching Top Gun. I did want to watch it because of all the commercials over the sequel coming out this week. I honestly did enjoy this movie a lot more than I thought I did. The plot, the characters development, the action really held my attention.

I could have dealt without the sex scene in this movie. I honestly thought it served no purpose except to add like 60 seconds to the movie. I thought it did nothing to Mavericks character.

I enjoyed Mavericks character development over the course of the movie. Because he did went from this cocky, arrogant character that no one can stand to someone that the others can actually be around. Even if it means he is still cocky and dangerous when it comes to flying.

I don’t know if I could have picked a better cast than the one that was in this movie. I thought that the cast was perfect and you could tell the chemistry that they had with each other. Even though this was released in the 80’s, I would still say that it is a good movie in the year of 2022. I don’t throw around the word classic but this was a classic. And I can now understand why people love to watch it.

Would I Recommend?

Yes. If you are looking for a fun time then this is the movie for you. If you are looking for an 80’s gem that still holds up today then watch it. If you are looking for a fast pace movie with a cocky main character that can have a redemption arc then I would recommend it.

The only way I wouldn’t recommend this movie is if you are easily triggered by some of the trigger warnings in this movie. Even though this movie is rated PG, I would not recommend children to watch it alone (or at all). I think that teens who are at the very least 13, can watch this movie. But definitely not younger than that.

Rating:

4 out of 5 stars
